Trials, from Galileo to Scopes

There are basic and obvious similarities between the trials of Galileo Galilei and John Scopes.

In both cases, decisions were rendered without concern for underlying scientific issues. Was the earth the center of the universe? Did humans descend from monkeys?

Those topics were not considered. The questions were, Did Galileo or Scopes teach offending concepts?

Guilty as charged.

In both instances the intent was to preserve power structures which depended on doctrine and dogma.

Who was injured by moons orbiting around Jupiter?

If species of finch, iguana and tortoise mutated on the Galapagos Islands, how did that affect lives of anyone in Dayton, Tennessee in 1925?

In both instances, scientific inquiry was impeded.

The Truth did not set Galileo free.
