I also wonder about the bit about socialists being in favour of more protectionism. In the US now, perhaps, but not at all times and in all places. The soft socialist left in Britain, for example, was historically very strongly in favour of free trade and opposed to tariffs, through the later nineteenth century and up to the 1920s, for example.
