Talk:Libertarian Declaration of Human Rights
From Libertarian Wiki
I'm trying to focus on distinct but broad rights so that they offer a clear path of reform and also include a wide variety of libertarians. General statements of rights (life, liberty, pursuit of happiness) run into semantic trouble-- two libertarians would agree that everyone should have "the right to life", but when it comes down to defending that right, they may be on opposite sides of the issue (see abortion, for example).
On the other hand, "property" is a rather specific institution that implements the right to own. I avoided property (or placed it lower on the list) because there are a variety of attitudes towards property among libertarians, ranging from the far left anarchists (no property) to the far right (everything is property, including thoughts). While libertarians disagree on the specific form that ownership should take, all agree that everybody should have the socially recognized right to own...the transferability of ownership and the accumulation of ownership being more advanced topics.
If we can come to some sort of agreement on format and make a concise statement of it, then we can include it on the main page. Adam 10:53, 16 Jan 2005 (PST)
