Ron Paul

Jump to: navigation, search

Ron Paul is a U.S. Congressman from the state of Texas. He was elected to his current seat as a Republican in 1996, and previously also served in the U.S. Congress as a Republican briefly in 1976, and from 1979 to 1985. In 1988 he was the Libertarian Party nominee for President of the United States. In January 2007 he announced he is seeking the Republican Party nomination for president in 2008.

Although he currently holds office as a Republican, he holds a life membership in the Libertarian Party and has addressed LP conventions as recently as 2004. When he ran in 1996 to regain a congressional seat after having run for President as a Libertarian, the Republican Party opposed him and openly backed his opponent in the primary. They did the same in 1998 even though Paul was the sitting incumbent. However, since 2000 the Republican Party has not attempted to contest him in the primary. Paul has won decisive re-election victories over Democratic opponents in every election since 1998 and ran unopposed in 2004.

Ron Paul's political views are sometimes described as paleolibertarian and he is widely cited as having the most libertarian voting record of any member of Congress.

Ron Paul operates a telephone hotline with a weekly recorded message where he gives a three minute talk on various pro-liberty subjects at 1-888-322-1414. The call is toll-free.

On June 10, 2008, Dr. Paul founded the Campaign for Liberty, a political organization, as a continuation of the momentum from his 2008 Presidential bid for the nomination of the Republican Party.
