Thomas Paine expressed many of the basic concepts in The Age of Reason and Common Sense.

Others are expressed in the Bill of Rights, The Constitution, as well as subsequent interpretations and applications of those principles.

1) The wall of separation of church and state.

2) Acquiring land by purchase rather than conquest. The Louisiana Purchase demonstrates this idea.

3) No bill of attainder or ex post facto Law shall be passed. We avoided applying this concept at the Nuremberg Trials as well as the recent trial of Saddam Hussein.
