A political party is a grouping of people for the purpose of advancing a set of shared political goals, and usually for electing members of the party to political office.

Political parties may adopt a "big tent" approach of combining different constituencies around a somwehat shared set of values, or they may adopt an ideology based approach aimed at advancing their political views. Many modern political parties combine elements of both.

In the United States there also exist libertarians organized as caucuses within the two major political parties as the Democratic Freedom Caucus and the Republican Liberty Caucus. Some small state-level parties have largely libertarian platforms such as the Personal Choice Party in the state of Utah.
