The state uses money and monetary policy as a way to control behavior and the overall economy.
Attempts to liberate one's self from state-money include:
- The Gold Standard (wikipedia)
- Local Currencies such as Ithica Hours
- E-Gold (official website) and other online precious metal-based payment options
- Liberty Dollars (official website)
- barter and other off-the-books ways of trading goods and services
- Several Alternative money systems have been proposed.
Within agorism the term counter-economy is sometimes used to refer to methods of exchange outside of the issuance (and taxation and regulation) of the state, and is seen as a way to make an end-run around the government.
