The Libertarian Party of Virginia is the state affiliate in the Old Dominion State. Prominent libertarians in this commonwealth include Bill Redpath, Marc Montoni, and James W. Lark III, and Steve Dasbach, all of whom have also served in major roles in the national LP. The Party has many elected and appointed public officeholders, particularly in the position of soil and water conservation district director. Ballot access laws in this state are tough (10,000 signatures being required for statewide races, and 10% being required to obtain major party status), but the Party's running of statewide candidates in 2001 (Governor and Lt. Governor) and 2008 (U.S. Senate) bear testimony to the devoted nature of the Party's petitioners. 2008 was, in fact, the first year the LPVA ran a U.S. Senate candidate. The Party has worked on local issues as well, including helping defeat tax increases in Hampton Roads.
