John Kerry is a U.S. Senator from Massachusetts and was the 2004 presidential nominee of the Democratic Party (United States). There is considerable speculation that he may attempt to run again for the nomination in 2008.

Kerry began his political career as a Vietnam veteran testifying in Congress against the Vietnam War. He would soon run for the U.S. Congress, which he lost, but eventually ran for and became attorney general and then lieutenant governor of Massachusetts, and finally ran for and won his current U.S. Senate seat in 1984.

Apart from his early activism in favor of ending the Vietnam War, his record has generally been in favor of bigger government. As a longtime supporter of gun control he has a poor record on gun rights issues. He is also an advocate of vastly expanding government national service programs. During the 2004 campaign he proposed the federal government pay for four years of college tuition in exchange for two years in a national service program. He also voted in the Senate in favor of the Iraq War, NAFTA, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, the Telecommunications Act, the Brady Bill, and No Child Left Behind.
