Issues:

Personal responsibility is discouraged by government denying individuals the opportunity to exercise it. In fact, the denial of freedom fosters irresponsibility. Through many laws and regulations, the government claims to know better than the individual how to run that person's life.

Individuals should be free to make choices for themselves and to accept responsibility for the consequences of their actions. We must accept the right of others to choose for themselves if we are to have the same right. Our support of an individual's right to make choices in life does not mean that we necessarily approve or disapprove of those choices.

Solutions:

We support:

Repealing condescending laws that take away individual choice. Rational, law-abiding adults should be free to make their own legal decisions regarding themselves. For those who are under the legal guardianship of another, such as children and the mentally handicapped or insane, such decisions must be made by the guardians. In the event that the guardian does not have the dependent’s best interests at heart, the issue requires settlement through the judicial system.

Repealing government programs and laws that award irresponsibility and reduce or eliminate accountability for one’s actions.

Holding responsible those whose actions violate the freedoms of others through law enforcement and a fair judicial branch.

Encouraging private sector dissemination of information to help consumers make informed decisions on products and services and enforcing laws against fraud and misrepresentation.

Benefits:

Libertarian policies will allow people to be free to make, and learn from, their own decisions, which will promote a more responsible society.
