Epicurus was an ancient Greek philosopher with considerable influence for a time after his death. His teachings were praised by Thomas Jefferson, and continue to be studied by a small community today.

He declared that justice is an agreement to "neither harm nor be harmed".

He advised against seeking political power, as it would unnecessarily complicate one's life and not bring happiness.

The ethics of Epicurus would today be called hedonism, the pursuit of pleasure for oneself. This includes the higher pleasures of the mind, not just pleasures of the body.
