5 to 10 Minute Tasks
Call your State Representative about a Particular Issue:
I know that it might seem futile to attempt to contact your congress critter in the House or Senate, but there is strength in numbers. Representatives were overwhelmed with calls protesting the latest bailouts of the financial and auto industry. Although the bailout package eventually passed, remember that it failed to pass the House the first time around. Speaking to someone in a Representative's office will also allow you to practice your speaking and argumentative skills. Being intellectually well equipped is vital for making a strong case for liberty.
Post New Ideas on Bureaucrash Social:
In order to become an effective force for the cause of liberty we should all strive to create new and creative ways to spread the message of liberty. If you have an eye-catching idea post it on Bureaucrash Social for everyone to see. Keep in mind that most youth activists are associated with leftist causes. We need our own creative ammunition to shoot down bad economics and bad politics.
Link to Bureaucrash.com on Social Networking Sites:
It seems like a simple idea, but make sure that your friends on social networking websites like Facebook, MySpace, Meetup, etc are familiar with Bureaucrash Social and Bureaucrash.com. The more members we have, the more we ideas we can generate on how to spread the ideas of liberty.
Cities/States with Smoking Bans:
Civil disobedience has always been a way to convey your dissatisfaction with a particular law or injustice. It is important to keep in mind that working in groups is better than alone when challenging smoking bans. You can also think about leaving "Smoking is Healthier than Fascism" literature or stickers in bars (with permission of course). Please do NOT violate the property rights of the bar or business owner.
15 to 30 Minute Tasks
Stay Informed:
Keep in mind that most people fail to read the news or keep up to date with political events or legislative decisions. As an advocate for liberty take time out of your day to read the news and stay informed about the issues affecting out liberties.
"If we're going to have a successful democratic society, we have to have a well educated and healthy citizenry". -Thomas Jefferson
Write an Op/Ed or Letter to the Editor to your Local Newspaper:
Exercising your freedom of speech is on of the most important ways you can help spread the ideas of liberty and economic freedom. Many news outlets tend to advocate statist or big-government solutions to public policy issues. Make your voice heard and write letters to the editor or op/ed columns. Writing well thought out and articulate pieces in the newspaper will attract attention to your ideas and help reach hundreds or thousands of people.
Flyers and Book Inserts:
Since Bureaucrash is committed to upholding private property rights, I highly advocate that Crashers keep this in mind while distributing flyers, stickers, literature, inserts, etc.*
It might be perfectly acceptable to use small inserts to spread pro-freedom information in book stores. One idea might be have a small insert that links readers of "The Shock Doctrine" to Johan Norberg's response from the CATO Institute. Readers of Alan Greenspan's new book might be interested in learning about the Austrian Business Cycle Theory from FEE or the Mises Institute. Upload all ideas on Bureaucrash Social so that other Crashers can benefit from your ideas.
Flyers and information can be distributed to family, friends, students, or anybody on the street for that matter. Make sure that you approach people in a friendly manner and be respectful if they decline to accept literature from you. Flyers need to be eye-catching and informative yet concise. Remember to upload your ideas on Bureaucrash Social.
Hour or Longer Tasks
Stay Involved in Local Politics:
Many political decisions that affect your neighborhood or immediate area are passed at the local level. Bring friends and family with you and voice your opinion on local issues. Once you become familiar with local governmental procedure consider running for city or county office.
Plan and Coordinate a Counter-Protest or Demonstration:
Anti-capitalist protesters and leftist demonstrators that show up in force generally have a complete monopoly on tv news time spent covering the issue. As a crasher, make sure that the opposition opinion is known.
Start your own Blog or Commentary:
The blogosphere is a perfect medium for you to practice writing on issues concerning personal liberty and economic freedom. Make your blog known or use it privately to blog on personal ideas on liberty. Either way, it is a useful tool in advancing your own intellectual growth and allowing other bloggers to read up on libertarian ideas.
Host a Liberty Themed Movie Night:
Since when is having a group of friends over and watching a movie a bad thing? This is the perfect way to introduce friends or family to some simple ideas on liberty. Mises.org has a great starter list of movies that highlight the freedom vs. state dynamic. Make sure that when you are speaking with friends or family you don't push too hard and drive them away. Introducing ideas on freedom will sometimes require a lighter touch.
